Celebration & Connection

Ahh, summer.

Sure, the Kootenays are stunning all year round. But we have a special place in our hearts for summer! The forests are fragrant and the flowers are all in bloom. There’s an abundance of herbs to collect for our kitchen concoctions.

What we love the most, though, is that certain joie de vivre that can be seen everywhere you look. Whether you’re enjoying life in a small town or a big city, everywhere you look, everyone seems a little, well, happier. The people you pass on bustling streets or in quiet trails all come across as more easy-going and friendly.

So many parts of life move outside for the summer: instead of always around a table, meals with friends often happen sprawled on blankets on the grass. Chats with a loved one happen, instead of on the couch, on the summit of a mountain. Suddenly the backdrop to our everyday rituals shifts to the gorgeous outdoors.

One of our most cherished pleasures at this time of year – one shared by people in so many different cultures across the globe – is enjoying cold, refreshing mocktails and cocktails with loved ones. Whether they’re savoured on a sun-lit porch, taken in mason jars to sip beside the river, or enjoyed on a rooftop patio under a sterling night sky, cocktails are one of the simplest joys of the season.

They are, in many ways, the epitome of summer: the cold glass in your hand invites instant relaxation. The mindful act of concocting them indicates the slow pace of life on warm days. And it’s over these special drinks that we share stories, secrets, and laughter with the people we care about.

And we’re not just talking about any old highball! We mean thoughtfully crafted, healthy cocktails that use locally-grown or foraged herbs and plants, and swapping out sugary soda for kombucha, the fermented drink that helps our digestive systems – and whole bodies – thrive. Not only are these kind of cocktails healthier and more sophisticated, they also often come without a hangover.

Sound complicated? It’s not! Often the beauty of these drinks is in their simplicity. Our cocktails are simply kombucha + spirit + garnish, and the mocktails are kombucha + garnish. Our favourite recipes are fabulous and easy – and we’ll be sharing them with you over the summer, right here.

Here’s a great one to start with:

Cucumber Mojito
Live It Up! + Tequila + Garnish

  • 1 oz. tequila (optional)

  • Himalayan sea salt

  • Fresh mint leaves

  • ½ oz. freshly-squeezed lime juice

  • 1 lime wedge

  • 3 inches of peeled cucumber

  • 2-3 cucumber slices (garnish)

  • 1 sugar cube (optional)

  • Fernie Alpine Springs kombucha: “Live It Up!” flavour

Screen Shot 2018-06-26 at 9.30.40 AM.png
  1. Scatter the sea salt on a plate. Rim a mason jar or rocks glass with the lime wedge, then dip the rim of the glass into the salt.

  2. In the bottom of the glass, muddle cucumber, lime juice, mint leaves, and sugar cube (if using) until well-mixed or sugar cube is dissolved.

  3. Add tequila (or omit it if you’d prefer a mocktail)

  4. Top up with Live It Up! Kombucha

  5. Garnish with cucumber slices and a couple of mint leaves.

  6. Enjoy!

This summer ritual of connecting over cocktails really has us appreciating our loved ones these days, and wanting to reach out to let them know how much we appreciate them. So, with that in mind, we are so excited to unveil our latest project: postcards.

These pretty postcards will be available free with any purchase, at all of the places you can pick up Fernie Alpine Springs kombucha. Whether it’s your local tap station, or our booth at a farmer’s market, we can’t wait to share these little squares of connection with you. Postcards might seem archaic, but they’re the perfect way to easily and thoughtfully remind someone, in writing, that you care about them.

Handwritten invite to porch cocktails at your place, left in a neighbour’s mailbox? Or maybe a mailed love-note to someone who’s too far away for you to enjoy their company in person? Perhaps even just written reminder to yourself to show a little extra care to your body on more challenging days, then taped to the wall where you’ll see it.

We crafted these cards as a way to continue the ritual of hand-crafted drinks, as a way to celebrate a life outdoors, and – most importantly – as a way to spread a little extra love around this season. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Happy summer!
